Dud Bascomb
Al Stewart
In 1971, Dud Bascomb and I played in the trumpet section for the Broadway show "Purlie," which starred Cleavon Little and Melba Moore. One night during a performance I glanced in Dud's direction and saw this moment. I quickly put down my horn, reached for my camera, and photographed it. Dud had an extensive musical background, played with Duke Ellington's band, and is remembered also for a great solo that he played on the recording of "Tuxedo Junction" with Erskine Hawkins' band.
