photo l.a. 2003, the Los Angeles Photographic Print Exposition produced by the Stephen Cohen Gallery, was held January 16-19 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California. This was the 12th anniversary of photo l.a., which has become a world-class event.

The largest and longest running photographic art exhibition in the West had eighty exhibitors from over thirty cities as well as galleries from Denmark, France, the Czech Republic, Italy and Russia. They presented the finest photographic art, from the earliest 19th-century photographic experiments to the most contemporary photography and photo-based art. As with every year, this is an unparalleled opportunity for collectors, curators and photographers to view thousands of images from all over the world. Works by Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Eugene Atget, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertész, Robert Mapplethorpe, Man Ray, Weegee, Edward Weston and many others will be included. Over 6000 people attended last year's fair according to Stephen Cohen, organizer of the event.

BENEFIT RECEPTION

The opening night preview reception, hosted by actor and photo enthusiast Joe Mantenga, benefitted the Photographic Arts Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. LACMA, as the museum is known, has one of the major collections of photography in the United States.

The lecturers were Debbie Flemming Caffery, Bruce Davidson, Lauren Greenfield, Jock Sturges, and renowned film director Wim Wenders, who has produced numerous monographs and whose retrospective is touring the Guggenheim Museums. Bruce Davidson is a major figure in modern photography, having won the first grant for photography from the NEA. Debbie Flemming Caffery is best known for her poetic images of Louisiana, Portugal, and Mexico. Lauren Greenfield’s Girl Culture, a new monograph, is on a national museum tour. Enrique Martinez Celaya will discuss his artist book, The Guide. Jock Sturges’ striking portraits of women are widely collected by museums and private collectors. There were on-site collecting seminars with collectors Michael Wilson, Manfred Heiting, and curator historian and photographer Leland Rice.
