artfairs inc. was the proud presenter of photo l.a. 2008, the 17th Annual International Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition and the largest exhibition of its kind in the United States, which took place January 10–13, 2008, in a new and larger location: the 35,000-square-foot Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport.

photo l.a. has become one of the country's most popular art fairs. The new event space allows for larger booths and an improved lighting system, producing a clean, modern backdrop against which to display more photo-based art, including digital and video art, than ever before.

Created by Stephen Cohen, producer of the highly acclaimed art fairs photo Miami, ART LA, photo san francisco and photo new york, photo l.a. features the finest photographic art on display and for sale, from the earliest 19th Century photographic experiments to the most contemporary photography and photo-based art.  Seventy of the world's leading galleries and private dealers representing International and U.S. artists displayed work at photo l.a. 2008.

"Los Angeles is home to many artists—a major creative center in terms of the production of photography and photo-based art," says Stephen Cohen, producer of photo l.a., owner of the Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles, and co-owner of the Cohen Amador Gallery in New York.  "photo l.a. 2008 presents an international array of galleries, artists, curators, collectors, critics and art enthusiasts with an opportunity to enjoy the best photography that our city and the world have to offer.  It will be a major cultural event in the Los Angeles fine art landscape."

Highlights of the exhibition included works by world-renowned contemporary artists including Masao Yamamoto, Chris Jordan, James Fee, Hellen van Meene, William Eggleston, David Hilliard, and Luis Gonzalez Palma.  Works by photography luminaries Eugene Atget, Brassai, Dorothea Lang, Julius Shulman, Aaron Siskind, Walker Evans, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, Weegee, Josef Sudek, Edward Weston, Edmund Teske, Henry Callahan, and Ansel Adams also were on display.

At the opening night reception artfairs, inc. and photo l.a. 2008 welcomed to Los Angeles the new department head and Curator of Photography at LACMA, Charlotte Cotton. The evening's festivities also presented the perfect occasion to honor renowned architectural photographer Julius Shulman who was presented with photo l.a.'s inaugural lifetime achievement award in association with The Center — a nonprofit organization that honors, supports, and provides opportunity for gifted and committed photographers.  Proceeds from the opening night reception benefit the Photography Department of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  In conjunction with the exhibition, a lecture and seminar series included Julius Shulman and Charlotte Cotton.
